My Bio

My name is Melissa Rich, and I am running for Tooele County School Board District 6. I am a mom of six, a former teacher, and someone who truly cares about this community. Three of my children have graduated from Tooele County schools, and my other three are currently enrolled, with two in high school and one in junior high.

One of the main responsibilities of a school board member is hiring and supporting district leadership. I was involved in selecting our current superintendent, who is focused on student achievement and data-driven decision making. We also brought in a new business administrator to help strengthen budgeting and long-term planning for the district.

As our county continues to grow, school funding remains a major issue. Our schools are primarily funded through property taxes, but housing growth has outpaced business growth, creating challenges in keeping up with student needs. I have spent hours at the State Capitol working with legislators to help them better understand the challenges our district faces.

Experience matters as our district continues to grow and improve.

My goal is simple: support students, strengthen schools, and help every child succeed.

My Key Issues

Quality Education

While our student population is rapidly increasing, school funding has struggled to keep pace. I have spent countless hours at the State Capitol advocating for our schools and helping legislators understand the real challenges our district faces. I am focused on student achievement and using data to make decisions that will help them succeed. I believe every child deserves access to quality education, strong teachers, and the resources they need to succeed.

Property Taxes

Our schools are mainly funded through property taxes, which are meant to support students and provide the resources they need to succeed. The rapid growth in housing here is not matched by the same level of business growth. This creates challenges, because property tax revenue alone is not keeping pace with the needs of a growing student population. I have spent hours at the State Capitol, working with the Legislature to help them understand the challenges that we face.

Experience

Since our school board has recently seen turnover, experience is important as we continue to improve and grow. Being able to continue to work with the State to advocate for the students is a crucial part of making sure that we can improve the quality of education that our children deserve.
